Surah Al-Fatiha (1)
Makki · The Opening — the heart of every prayer
What it means:
Verse 1 (the Basmala) teaches us to begin in the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, seeking His help and blessing in everything we do.
Verse 2 tells us that all praise and thanks belong to Allah alone, the Lord who created, owns and looks after all the worlds.
Verse 3 repeats two of His names, Ar-Rahman and Ar-Rahim, reminding us that His mercy is vast and reaches all of creation.
Verse 4 tells us that He is the Master of the Day of Judgement, when every person will be repaid for their deeds.
Verse 5 is our promise: we worship Allah alone, and we ask for help from Allah alone.
Verse 6 is the great request: we ask Allah to guide us to the straight path — the true way of Islam — and to keep us on it.
Verse 7 describes that path: the path of those Allah has blessed (the prophets, the truthful and the righteous), not the path of those who knew the truth and rejected it, nor of those who went astray without knowledge.
Lessons:
- Al-Fatiha is recited in every unit (rak'ah) of every prayer, so understanding it changes how we pray.
- It begins with praising Allah before asking Him for anything — a beautiful manner of making du'a.
- The most important thing we ask for, many times every day, is guidance.
- It is the custom to say “Amin” (O Allah, answer) after it.
